Backup and Disaster Recovery
Backup and disaster recovery go hand in hand. Having a good backup solution is meaningless if it can't survive a disaster.
Preparing for disaster recovery starts with data protection. Studies have shown that company data is often the most valuable asset that companies have, often ranked as high as the trained and loyal employees that run the company.
As such, without a good data protection component, even the best disaster recovery plan is doomed to fail.
Similarly, plans for backup and recovery must contemplate the impact of full-scale disaster.
For example, in the event of a citywide earthquake, a backup on magnetic tape in a warehouse across town does little good. Time to recovery will be long and the recovery process will be painful. In this case, business continuity is unlikely.
Unfortunately, studies show that companies that cannot quickly recover from disaster typically will be out of business shortly after the disaster.
As such, it is no surprise that smart companies address both backup planning and disaster recovery planning in a single, integrated and holistic fashion.
One without the other is a recipe for disaster.
