Business Continuity Versus Disaster Recovery

In this article, we compare and contrast business continuity versus disaster recovery.

What's the difference between business continuity planning and disaster recovery planning?

It's a very subtle difference, and in many cases the terms are now used interchangeably.

Disaster recovery typically refers how companies recover from large scale disasters, like an earthquake or the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Business continuity planning, in contrast, suggests a more comprehensive approach to making sure you can keep making money in the event of a disaster or any disruptive event. Even small disruptive events, such as a hard drive failure in the office, are covered by a good business continuity plan.

The two disciplines share a common goal.

Both business continuity plans and disaster recovery plans determine how a company will keep functioning after a disruptive event until its normal facilities and capabilities are restored.
